You can view the proposed layout of the bike path map on our Dickinson County Bike Path page.
The Dickinson County Bike Path idea was “born” in the Dickinson County Planning Commission Dec. 2006.
Upon further information, it was discovered that some cities had been or were working on a bike path system over the past few/several years.
All ten cities and townships in Dickinson County are now updating their Recreation plan (to apply for grant monies). This Recreation Plan has to be updated every 5 years per State requirements.
There is also a State of Michigan desire to have a state-wide bike path system.
We (the bike path committee) are also working with and are in communication with other Michigan counties, Wisconsin counties, CUPPAD, State of Michigan officials, and other organizations to facilitate a cooperative functional bike path system.
All ten cities and townships in Dickinson County are joining forces and working together as one big community effort to proceed on this huge endeavor, of not only having an updated Rec. Plan, but also to have a County-wide bike path system.
We are working to procure monies through grants, fundraisers, and other donations to (hopefully) not assess the general public with a tax.
We are currently working on setting up a tax deductible system to receive funding and to apply for grants, etc.
There is a general consensus among those in attendance at the meetings this project is in the best interest of all concerned and for the entire geographic area.
The larger the bike path area, the more municipalities involved, the more favorable it is to receive grant monies from various agencies.
There are also some sub-committees that now meet on a regular basis, between the regular monthly bike path meeting. We are still looking for more volunteers and ideas.
The Dickinson County Bike Path Committee meets the third Tues. of every month at the Dickinson County Library on Iron Mountain Street in Iron Mountain, MI at 6:00 PM, CT.
